Amish Friendship Bread

Remember that bread dough that was past around in the 80’s that smelled AWFUL but somehow managed to turn into a really great loaf of sweet sour dough bread – ??? – well I’ve got it, and now you do too! . . .

To start, mix together the following ingredients (DO NOT refrigerate or stir with a metal spoon!!!):

Mix together 1 cup milk, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, (might by lumpy – and that’s OK)

Day 1:  Do Nothing

Day 2:  Do Nothing

Day 3:  Stir with a wooden spoon (try to stir out bubbles)

Day 4:  Do nothing

Day 5:  Do nothing

Day 6:  Add 1 cup milk, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and mix thoroughly with wooden spoon,

Day 7:  Do nothing

Day 8:  Stir with wooden spoon

Day 9:  Do nothing

Day 10:  Add 1 cup milk, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour.   Stir with a wooden spoon and pour 1 cup each into 3 different containers.  Give to 3 friends along with a copy of the rest of this recipe.

Then mix original batter into the following:

  • 1 cup cooking oil
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  •  1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp cinnamon (actually, go ahead and use as much cinnamon as you like)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 large box vanilla instant pudding

Divide batter into 2 separate loaf pans and sprinkle tops with cinnamon sugar.

May add nuts, raisins or mini chocolate chips if desired.

Bake 1 hour at 325 degrees, and enjoy!
