Originating as a rough laboreres’ snack food, the mighty Pizza has come a long way since 1889.
Back then a Neapolitan baker by the name of Raffaele Esposito made the very first pizza, as we know it today, with a cheese topping .
To celebrate the colors of the Italian flag – green, white and red – he created a pizza topped with a combination of basil, mozzarella and tomatoes. Named after Queen of Italy, Margherita Teresa Giovanni, the “Margarita Pizza” was born. Nearly every pizza invented since has been based off this original version, and there are a LOT of inventions of pizza since then.
The first pizza bakery in the United States opened in New York over 100 years ago. But pizza in the states didn’t become that widely popular until the ’50s, and today there are more then 55,000 + pizzerias in the US and pizza has become part of the American mainstream.
